[Civil War Era]. Marshall Love: Thirty-Ninth New Jersey Infantry Certificate Lithograph.

An engraved and hand-colored soldier's service certificate lithograph fulfilled in manuscript at center for one Marshall Love of Company K with the 39th Regiment of New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. 21.5" x 27.5" (sight). Lithographed by The Pettibone Brothers. Bottom left imprint reads: "Published Expressly for the Army and Navy Record Co." Bottom right imprint reads: "Entered According to Act of Congress in the Year 1883 by the Pettibone Brothers Mfg. Company in the Office of Librarian of Congress at Washington."

It records Marshall Love's tour of duty from his September 14, 1864 enlistment until his June 17, 1865 discharge. According to a copy of Love's service record, which is included with the lot, Love originally mustered into Company B of the 11th New Jersey Infantry on August 14, 1862 and was discharged for disability in June 1863. At bottom center the certificate records that it was "Presented by Conrade Love, to his wife, Elizabeth and Children William, Mary, Angeline, Mertie, James, Dora and Frank. February 1912". It is framed to the overall size of 24.5" x 30.5" Not examined outside of the frame.

Condition: Scattered foxing and soiled. Frame with general wear, including scratches and chips. Glass soiled with two areas at upper margin of paper adhesive attachment.
