Description
Officer's Wool Sash I.D.'d to New York Cavalry Captain.126" long loosely-woven red wool sash with knotted "acorn" tassels at either end. Acquired at a New Haven, Connecticut estate sale with other items that belonged to Captain Frank Munson, 5th Regiment New York Cavalry. The exact sash is pictured in Frank Mroczka's book "Starting Your First Civil War Collection" on page 120. Monson (also spelled Munson) enlisted in Company B 1st New York Cavalry on August 16, 1861. He served as an orderly to General Irwin McDowell. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company L 5th New York Cavalry on August 8, 1862 and was wounded at Warrenton, Virginia on May 3, 1863. He died in New Haven, Connecticut on June 30, 1908. Condition: excellent with a few very minor stains. There are no holes, rips or pulls in the fabric.
