Civil War: Cased State of New Jersey "First Defender 1861" Medal Named to George H. Doane.

43 mm bronze planchet, measuring 3 ½-inches to the top of the pinback bronze pendant. Silk U.S. flag ribbon. The obverse features the seal of the State of New Jersey surmounted by an eagle, shield and stars; captioned "A FIRST DEFENDER 1861". Reverse captioned: THE STATE OF / NEW JERSEY / TO / GEORGE H. DOANE. / A MEMBER OF / N. J. BRIGADE / MILITIA / FOR PROMPT & LOYAL SERVICE / 1861." The pendant reads: "1st REGT. 1861." Doane was a Chaplain during the war. The award was instituted in 1901 and only issued to surviving veterans, not relatives. Thus, of the 4,000 members of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Regiments who volunteered, only those still living in 1901 received the medal.

Condition: The silk ribbon is tender but the medal and case are in overall very good condition. Nicolas D. Wood Collection
