Description

Revolutionary War Period Teardrop Shape Standing Wooden Canteen With Crown Stamp.

A rarely seen canteen type measuring approximately 11 ¼-inches tall; 5 ½-inches wide and 3 ½-inches deep. Featuring teardrop-shaped front and rear panels with slats held by ¾-inch wide metal bands. Iron lanyard rings are mounted on either side to which is currently mounted a ½-inch leather strap. It's unknown if the strap is original to the canteen. The bottom of the canteen features two wooden legs to allow the canteen to rest securely upright. Of particular interest is a faintly stamped crown over the number 53 on the bottom of the canteen. The significance of the crown stamp is unknown, but it can be speculated that it was perhaps an English proof mark or trademark. Faint and illegible wording or names carved on either side.

Condition: Very good condition. The wood exhibits a few nicks and scuffs, as expected for an item that is over 200 years old. The wood slats are solid and the metal bands quite tight. The metal has light surface rust as you would expect. Leather strap worn, but sturdy.
