Description
19th Century Amputation Saw.Measuring approximately 17 1/2-inches overall, this 19th-century surgical amputation saw is fitted with a 9 1/2-inch serrated steel blade (marked: PS / STUBS) and a shaped wooden handle of figured grain with an adjustable design for practical surgical use. The handle is well-contoured for grip, reflecting the utilitarian craftsmanship of the period. No maker's markings are present. Please note: Amputation saws such as this were an essential tool of 19th-century surgery, particularly in battlefield and hospital settings where traumatic injuries frequently necessitated limb removal. Though grim by modern standards, instruments of this kind were critical in saving lives before the widespread adoption of antiseptic practices and advanced surgical techniques. This example represents the straightforward, durable design typical of surgical equipment of the era.
Condition: Very good overall. The steel elements displays a gray patina with light to moderate pitting. Sharp, well-defined teeth still present. The figured wooden handle is well made and remains in good condition, showing only minor marks consistent with age and use.
