Altered U.S. Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor Rifle.

Unserialized, .50-70 caliber, 32 1/2-inch barrel. Lockplate marked U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / [eagle] and 1863 rear of hammer. Also a W A after Springfield [crudely marked]. Model / 1870 / eaglehead / crossed arrows / US on top of breech block. Carvings throughout including S [reverse] J JOHNSHON on left side of forearm, JHM and numerous characters near the buttstock area on the left side. Right side with [reverse] MHJ and a few other characters scattered on buttstock; including a half moon [within a diamond design]. Interesting carvings throughout making this Springfield a conversation piece. Please note: these Springfields were issued from 1870-1873 and reached a quantity of about 11,500 units.

Condition: Fair. No finish left, mostly a dark mottled patina with pitting overall. Numerous dings and mars present on wood, stock possibly a period replacement or altered. No ramrod present. Dark bore, action ok.
