Description

WWII U.S. Gold Star Coffin Flag Of Private Earl C. Alberts Killed in Action, Davao, Mindanao, Philippine Islands, May 31, 1945.

Earl C. Alberts was born at Clear Lake, South Dakota, on April 24, 1924. He was inducted on March 10, 1944 and received his basic training at Camp Roberts, California. He was assigned to Co. "E" Nineteenth Infantry, 24th Division and took part in the landing on New Guinea and in the fighting in the Philippines. He was instantly killed while attempting to clean out a sniper's nest near Davao, Mindanao on May 31, 1945. He was awarded a posthumous Purple Heart and was buried in the United States Armed Services Cemetery at Talomo NO. 1, Talomo, Mindanao, P.I. He left behind his mother, father, two brothers and a fiancé.

The machine-sewn 48-star flag measures approximately 58 x 112-inches and is constructed of wool with muslin stars. There are 15 white stars and 33 gold stars. Two zinc grommets are at each end of the hoist. No maker's marks are present. The flag is accompanied by a black-and-white photo of Earl in his civilian suit, a photo in uniform with his mother, a photo of him with his M1 Garand, and five photos taken at his memorial service in September, 1948. Most photos show his flag-draped coffin. Finally, the flag includes two memorial brochures, a letter from the Veterans Administration on the issuance of flags and a brochure published by the Veterans Administration on how to use the flag in draping a coffin. A deeply evocative flag made more so by the personal photos taken at his memorial service.

Condition: Excellent.
