Description
Identified WWI RFC Uniform
WWI Royal Flying Corps Uniform Identified to Second Lieutenant William Maurice Montgomery McNeill-Hamilton.Comprising: 1.) RFC green wool-twill service jacket with tan polished-cotton lining. Written in ink on the lining near the collar is "M. McNeill Hamilton". The jacket has two large lower flap pockets and two pleated upper flap pockets. All RFC buttons are present. The rope-border buttons have no back marks. A beautifully embroidered 4-inch RFC wing is sewn to the jacket just above the left breast pocket and 2nd Lt. pips are sewn to the shoulder straps. 2.) Green wool trousers with button fly a "Silvers Reading" tailor's tag, and written in ink "McNeill Hamilton 503". The trousers are not an exact match for the jacket, however Internet research discovered that McNeill-Hamilton's maternity blouse with this same tailor's tag was previously sold online, so these trousers likely belonged to that uniform). 3.) RFC service hat, wool, with a Battersby & Company, London makers mark on the silk lining. Complete with RFC blade-backed hat badge, leather chinstrap and general service chinstrap buttons. One button has come unsewn but is present and can be easily re-sewn. 4.) 7 x 9-inch portrait of McNeill-Hamilton posed seated in his RFC maternity jacket. 5.) Miscellaneous ephemeral items the most notable item being a two-page letter from McNeill-Hamilton to his commanding officer requesting early demobilization to return to his farm in Lanarkshire, Scotland "which is very much behind on account of the war."
Condition: 1.) Very good. Only a few small moth holes present. 2.) Very good. Likewise, a few scattered, small moth holes. 3.) Very good. Some wear to lining and with a couple of unobtrusive, small moth holes. 4.) Excellent. 5. Very good.
