Description

Michael Price Abalone Mosaic California Knife
Circa 1856-1889. A true work of art, this knife by San Francisco's premier 19th century cutler, Michael Price, features an elaborate mosaic handle of native California abalone shell and silver; the topmost piece of abalone on each side being in the form of a keystone. The handle's wrapped edges and the guard are also silver and beautifully engraved with scrollwork. The 5-3/4"?spear point blade is uncleaned and lightly sharpened, with light spotting overall and traces of the original polish showing through. 10-1/4"?overall. The silver sheath is engraved like the handle on both sides and features Price's characteristic spring clip; the nickel silver ball tip is slightly bent. There are a few small dents in the sheath and a natural flaw in one abalone panel. An absolutely first rate California knife in excellent condition.
From the Ex Jack Royse Collection.
