Description
WWII 48-Star Flag Identified to the USS Missoula (APA-211) From the Dr. Clarence Rungee Collection.Wool, multipiece construction, brass grommets, 4 x 6-feet. Marked in ink by hand on the hoist "Okinawa Iwo Jima 36 Kamikaze USMC U.S.S. Missoula 211."
The Missoula was a Haskell-class attack transport laid down on June 20, 1944. She was sponsored by a female vocal group, the Harmonettes. She entered Navy service on October, 1944, and after a shakedown along the California coast she headed to Hawaiian waters for further training. Her first action was the embarkation of units of the 5th Marine Division for the invasion of Iwo Jima. Men she landed were responsible for raising the U.S. flag (not this one) on Mount Suribachi on two separate occasions. The Missoula also embarked troops and provided medical support during the invasion of Okinawa. She received two battle stars for her WWII service. She was broken up for scrap in 1975. The flag is accompanied by an inventory form from Dr. Clarence Rungee's Flag Heritage Foundation.
Condition: A few scattered very small holes, otherwise very good condition.
