Worn by John Young on his sixth and final flight into space.
Space Shuttle Columbia - Spacelab 1 (STS-9) Flown Embroidered Mission Patch Worn by Mission Commander John Young, Originally from his Personal Collection, Signed and Certified. STS-9, November 28, 1983 - December 8, 1983, was the sixth mission of Columbia and the ninth Shuttle flight overall. It had a six-man crew, the largest to that date, and carried the first Spacelab module, a joint NASA-European Space Agency project, into orbit for the purpose of conducting space-based scientific experiments. The mission insignia depicts the Spacelab payload showing from an opened cargo bay of the Columbia while orbiting the Earth. There are nine stars signifying the ninth of the shuttle missions and the crewmember surnames surrounding with "Columbia - Spacelab 1" below. This flown embroidered patch, 3.875" x 4.5" overall, is mounted to a printed sheet with the text: "Man-Systems Division/ Presents to: JOHN W. YOUNG/ COMMANDER" centered above, and "This original patch worn during your STS-9 Mission" at below right. This sheet is matted and framed to 14.25" x 11.25" overall (no glass). Young has written to the right of the patch: "My Suit Patch From. STS-9/ From My Personal Collection/ John W. Young". Young was one of the second group of astronauts chosen and flew six missions (Gemini 3, Gemini 10, Apollo 10, Apollo 16, STS-1, and STS-9) during his forty-two year career at NASA.
