19th Century General Surgical / Amputation Kit by Kern, C.
1860-70.Civil war military surgical set by Horatio G. Kern [Surgical Instrument Maker]. Appears to be about 85-90% complete. Medical tools include a small trephine saw, bone saw, tourniquet, surgical knives and a Gigli wire saw. Label inside reads HORATIO G. KERN / MANUFACTURER OF / SURGICAL AND DENTAL / INSTRUMENTS / SYRINGES, ELASTIC. TRUSTEE, &C / 25 N. SIXTH ST. PHILADA. Multiple compartments on lid side present which house general surgical tools with some empty slots while the other side houses most of the amputation tools with minimal vacancies. Most of the tools are marked H.G. KERN. Contained in original multi compartment wooden case measuring 16 by 7-inches. Top of lid reads U.S.A. / HOSPL. DEPT.
Condition: Very good as presented for its age. Expected fine marks to metal with some pitting present. Wooden case with some light scuffs, minor splits on edges. Bottom of case with stress cracks from weight of set and storage. In fine condition, given its age.
