Smith & Wesson Model 3 Russian Third Model "New Model Russian" Revolver.

Serial no. 47233 [butt also marked 1874 / P], .44 S&W Russian, 6 1/2-inch barrel. Nickel-plated finish. Commercial variation. Case-hardened hammer. Top of barrel reads + SMITH AND WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. JULY 10. 60. JAN. 17. FEB. 17. JULY 11. 65 & AUG. 24. 69. RUSSIAN MODEL +. Currently with smooth grips, possibly added by Mr. Robinson's Company according to Roy G. Jinks.
Note: According to S&W Factory records/letter, Roy G. Jinks states; gun with serial number 47233 was gun was shipped probably from our factory on February 1, 1877, and delivered to M.W. Robinson, New York City, NY, Smith and Wesson's largest distributor. The records indicate that this revolver was shipped with a 6.5 inch barrel, nickel finish, butt swivel, and smooth walnut grips; shipment of 40 units in a blue finish and 40 units in nickel.
Research from S&W also shows that this model was designed at the request of the Russian government in 1874, and referred to by them as the Model of 1874 or Cavalry Model. It was manufactured under contract for the Russians and other governments from 1874 until 1878 with a total production of 41,138. The gun was also produced for the Turkish government in .44 Henry Rim Fire with a total of 5,000 guns shipped to them and an additional 1,000 of the .44 Smith & Wesson Russian caliber being sold to Japan.

Condition: Very good plus, retains 70-80% nickel plating with scattered flaking, some pitting and fine scratches to high traffic areas and cylinder. Some spots to metal from dried grease present as well. Triggerguard with moderate wear, pitting. Grips have shrunken a bit, but good aging present. Crisp action, very good rifling and bore. Tracking line present.
