Description

Andrew Jackson Signed Appointment of Instructor to West Point.

One partially printed page, 13 3/4 x 17 1/2-inches, Washington; April 1, 1833. Appointment of artist Charles Leslie as Teacher of Drawing of the Military Academy. Signed, "Andrew Jackson." With patriotic and military vignettes at the top and bottom.

Charles Robert Leslie (1794 - 1859) gained a certain level of fame as a teenager when he produced a series of watercolors of English tragedian, George Frederick Cooke, in 1811. Following this success, he attended the Royal Academy in London, focusing on dramatical historical pieces. In 1816, Leslie returned to the United States for a major exhibition at The Pennsylvania Academy but returned to England shortly thereafter. In 1825, he was admitted as a Royal Academician.

Though Leslie traveled to America sporadically, he did not return permanently until he was offered the appointment at West Point featured here. Leslie's brother, Tom, had secured the position without the artists knowledge. Although the Philadelphia and New York art scenes welcomed him with open arms, he reportedly strongly disdained his position at the military academy. Reportedly unhappy with both his professional obligations and his living arrangements, he returned to England after only five months of employment at West Point.

Leslie's brief stint in the United States did not hurt his career. In 1837, he received a royal patronage from Queen Victoria and in 1847 he was named Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy. His lectures were published in 1855 as A Handbook for Young Painters.
