Description
Fine Etched Panel Colt Single Action Army Revolver.Serial no. 71509 [frame, triggerguard and butt] cylinder stamped 1509, .44-40 caliber, 7 1/2-inch barrel with fixed front sight and frame notch rear sight. Etched panel COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER on left side of barrel. Blued and case-hardened finish. Top of barrel marked: COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. Three-line, three-date patent to left side of frame. .44 C.F. stamped to left side of triggerbow. 44 also stamped under barrel. Varnished one-piece walnut grips. Manufactured in 1881 by Colt in Hartford, Ct.
Sold with Colt Factory letter confirming configuration apart from Barrel Length and Type of Stocks; "Not Listed". Gun shipped to Hibbard, Spencer & Company in Chicago, Illinois on September, 2 1881 in a shipment of 40 guns.
Please note: Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. was a prominent wholesale hardware company based in Chicago, Illinois. Originally established as Hibbard & Spencer in 1855, the company grew significantly over the years, eventually becoming one of the most important hardware businesses in the Midwest.
Condition: Very good. Retaining approximately 10-20% of bluing, mostly in protected areas, the balance a smooth grey patina. A patch of lacquer residue is observed near the muzzle. Case-hardened is now a silvered/brown patina with some traces on the hammer. Scratches and scuffs present to grip, concentrating on the lower half. Crisp action, strong rifling; but signs of pitting in bore. An honest example of an early Colt revolver designated as an intermediate black powder SAA.
