Confederate Major, Matt Dale.
Inscribed Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver with History
to Hood's Texas Brigade.Serial no. 94066 [frame, barrel, triggerguard and butt] and 94066 [cylinder], .36 caliber, 7 1/2-inch octagonal barrel marked -ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.- Brass bead front sight, Originally blued finish with walnut grips. Marked COLTS / PATENT left side of frame. "G / S" stamps on trigger bow and rear of triggerguard on left side. Gun was manufactured in 1860. Backstrap marked LEUT. MATT DALE. Bottom of grip butt marked REAGAN GUARD'S / TEXAS BAT TN.
Please note: The Reagan Guards became Company G, 1st Texas Infantry Regiment, and the Texas Battalion became Hood's Texas Brigade.
Highlights of photocopy paperwork provided; A.E. McClure and Matt Dale were editors, publishers, and proprietors of The Trinity Advocate, weekly newspaper established in 1850 in Palestine. The was later changed to The Palestine Advocate. Matt Dale was among Palestine citizens who enlisted in the Confederate army and served as Captain and later as Major in the famous Texas Brigade under command of General John B. Hood in the Army of the Northern Virginia. From Notes on Matt Dale, Confederate Soldier [photocopies provided]......"On June 7, 1862, when Major Dale wrote his brother a letter recorded in Volume I of Anderson County Probate Records.........the Confederate forces were defending Richmond against invasion by the union army under the command of General George B. McClellan. The fight of May 30 and 31 mentioned by Major Dale was the famous battel of Seven Pines when General Joseph E. Johnson, commander of the Confederate army, was wounded and was succeeded by General Robert E. Lee........The next important engagement in which Major Dale took part was the second Battle of Manassas or Bull Run which resulted in a decisive victory for the Confederate........The letter is recorded in Volume I, page 188, Probate Records, Anderson County, Texas. The handwriting was attested by Benjamin Parker, B.F. Durham, and W.G.W. Jowers."
Another letter states, "I forgot to say in my last letter that my promotion to Major having made a vacancy in the Lieutenancy of Company G it was filled Y.J. Rose a most excellent selection.....While I write the cannon are booming in front of us, and it may be that the fight will commence today, at any rate, it cannot be delayed many days.......
Included in this lot are photocopies and extensive research related to Matt Dale, photocopies of letters to family, muster rolls, correspondence from previous owner searching for information on Dals, handwritten research, Anderson County Genealogical Society papers and Kate Hunter notebooks reference printouts.
Matt Dale was killed in the Cornfield at Antietam, while acting as second in command of the regiment.
Condition: Good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with scattered signs of handling wear, age and patches of pitting. Visible cylinder scene, all markings clear and visible. Scuffs and dings present to wood, with some chips to toe and heel. Loading lever extremely tight to open, due to dried grease. Action tight, but functions. Strong rifling bore, with some pitting.
A great gun with important history.
