Description

US M1858 Cavalry Enlisted Man's Dress Hardee Hat.

Of typical form, it bears insignia of 1st Cavalry with stamped brass eagle side plate and yellow worsted wool cord. Insignia appears to be indigenous to the hat rather than a later addition. 2 1/4-inch maroon Moroccan sweatband about perfect as is the original gilt embossed Moroccan leather "U. S. Army / Extra" with eagle label in the inside crown. Very nice untouched Hardee hat and a superb example for display.

Condition: The hat is missing a [1/2-inch by 4 1/2-inch] strip of felt along the back edge at the stitched binding, not visible from the front, else perfect with no breaks or cracks and retaining original black ostrich feather plume.
