Cased Civil War Era Amputation Kit by G. Tiemann & Co, New York.

A very nice set of surgical and amputation instruments, set complete; highlights include a tourniquet, multiple surgical knives such as scalpels and Liston-style examples marked TIEMANN [apart from the 2 larger ones, not marked]. A large capitol amputation saw, [hidden] Liston bone nippers and smaller knife-style saw correctly marked in a separate compartment lid which sits on top of main set. All blades nicely mounted on ebony-style checkered handles. Label inside the lid of the green-velour lined wooden case reads G. TIEMANN & CO / MANUFACTURERS / OF / SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS / 63 CHATHAM ST. NY. Note: According to place card included with the set, this kit was used by Dr. Brandt of Warrenton, Missouri. Dimensions; 15 1/2 by 5-inches.

George Tiemann was born 1795 and died in 1868, he was a German immigrant who established himself in New York City and became one of the leading American makers of surgical instruments in the mid-19th century. Please note, according to research, address labels with the address reading 67 Chatham tend to be post war vs. examples with labels reading 63 Chatham, considered Civil War era.

Condition: Fine as presented, with minimal evidence of wear and use, some minor spots on blades as expected. Handles with stress and handling wear. The wooden case inside with minor scuffs, outer case with expected handling wear and nicks to edges. Stress wear to bottom on wood.
