Exhibited Hubbard Museum of the West.
Colt Single Action Army Revolver with History on Train
Robbery.Serial no. 77211 [frame and triggerguard], 53876 [butt] and 1964 [gate], .45 caliber [stamped on triggerbow], 4 3/4-inch barrel with fixed front blade sight and frame notch rear sight. Blued finish. Three-line, three-date patent. Smooth hardwood one-piece grip. JR carved into left side and four notches to base of right side. [for Jules Rosseau according to consignor]. Manufactured in 1882.
According to consignor notes, this gun was exhibited at the Hubbard Museum of the West, also that this gun was used in a Great Northern Railroad train robbery in Montana in 1910. This gun is mentioned on page 345 [Noted Revolvers] of Colt Peacemaker Encyclopedia Volume 2 by Keith Cochran. Included is a photocopy of the letter from Grover Johnson, Esq. to Bob Palazzo, dated April 8, 1974 detailing some of the history of the gun, mentioned by serial number. In it, parts read "I was very pleased to receive your letter re the old Colt Single Action Ser # 77211 I sold you at the Glendale Gun Show on Mar 9, 1974 since I lost your address"........."They all got away on horse except one Jules Rosseau who was unable to find his horse and therefore, hid about 25 N.E. of Kalispell.........Anyway, the posse scattered out among the road bed meadows and it was very long before Rosseau jumped up with his hands in the air and shouted to Sheriff Godreau "Don't shoot Sheriff" Don't shoot! I voted for you."..........This Colt had been offered in evidence at a trial before Judge Borquin in Missoula. It was later reclaimed by attorneys Logan and Childs of Kalispell who had defended the band............I was present when Atty Childs went to his safe, got the Single Action saying: Here's the old "Rosseau" pistol, its got a lot of notches on it and should be bad medicine for your bank robbers"
Colt Factory letter confirms current configuration [only 77211 is mentioned], but has barrel length and type of stocks, "Not Listed". Shipped to J.P. Moores Sons, NY on April 13, 1882, guns in shipment, 35. [Photocopy of Colt letter is included].
Property from the Estate of Robert (Bobby) Palazzo, Westlake Village, Ca.
Condition: Good. Finish primarily a smooth grey patina with scattered signs of handling wear and patches of pitting. Heavy scuffs and dings present to grip, with large crack to right side. Action needs adjustment. Lightly pitted bore.
