Description
W. Butcher Sheffield 'Dog Bone' Style Bowie Knife with Sheath.Having a 8 1/16-inch clip-point blade with Spanish notch. Ricasso marked: W (crown) R / W. BUTCHER / SHEFFIELD. Dark wooden handle fastened by four pins. Large rectangle escutcheon to each panel. German silver mounts. 13 1/2-inches in overall length. Contained in leather scabbard with metal mounts [clamshell design tip].
W.R. and (crown) Royal cipher fabrication attributed to reign of King William the IV.

Worth mentioning; A very similar bowie knife and clamshell feature scabbard by W. Butcher is described and pictured in the 1997 Butterfield & Butterfield catalog; featuring the William R. Williamson Bowie Knife Collection sale as lot 3517. That sale set multiple records and became an instant research tool for rare and historic edged weapons.
Condition: Good. Overall showing signs of age, handling wear and patches of pitting. Small cracks and scratches present to wood. Scabbard showing scattered scuffs. Collection of a Southern Gentleman
