Description
Robert E. Lee: Framed and Signed Carte de Visite.Appointed as the overall commander of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, Lee is remembered as an expert tactician and utilizing aggressive strategies. He surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, and soon after the war, he served as president of Washington College. This CDV features Lee wearing a dark suit, looking away from the camera lens. His portrait is framed by paper with a gold border accent. Despite some overall fading and toning, his signature remains strong at the lower right corner of his image, reading, "R E. Lee." Housed in an attractive 7 5/8" x 8 7/8" wooden frame inlaid with a gold-colored border, it has some minor separation at the corners and a few chips throughout. A tiny green accretion is present on the glass and a scuff is near the top. The image still has good contrast but has some fading, including the lightest area barely visible at the top of his head. A possible damp stain is present at the bottom edge. The back of the frame bears a note reading, "Autographed Photograph/ General R.E. Lee by M.B. Brady & Co.-Given to my/ Great Grandfather Charles L. Siegel After Civil War." The CDV has not been inspected outside of the frame. Overall, this piece is in lovely condition and great for display.
