Description

A Japanese Matchlock (Tanegashima) Presented to Jim Turnbull.

Overall length is 52 1/4-inches, approximately .50 caliber, with a 40-inch barrel with pronounced onion muzzle. Barrel, with Japanese decorations near breech. The figured stock with numerous engraved brass inlays throughout. Breech band with characteristic of Sakai helmet. Gun comes with brass plaque stating: MATCHLOCK GUN OF THE MIDDLE TOKUGAWA PERIOD (1700) PRESENTED TO JIM TURNBULL BY WILLIAM T. TAKAGAKI-SEPT. 1962. According to correspondence with Museum; "We've been unable to find anything on William T. Takagaki but assume he was likely in wood products in Japan, because in 1962, Mr. Turnbull became an Executive VP for the Douglas Fir Plywood Association (DFPA) and represented the US with the Japanese in wood products."

It is also interesting to note that Ms. Turnbull [James R. Turnbull's wife], was in the news at the beginning of the pandemic, regarding her seminal involvement in the first medical molded face mask by 3M. Evolving into the 3M N95 mask, it is the iconic image of the global pandemic.
