Fabulous Civil War Ladder Badge, ALS, Insignia, Reunion Ribbon and More Belonging to Private Wesley D. Remington, Company C, 50th Engineers New York Volunteers.The lot comprises: 1) German-silver five-bar ladder badge, from top to bottom "Co. C. / 50 / NEW YORK. / ENGINEERS. / CORPS." The badge is complete with mounting pin and two small gilt-war tassels suspended from the lower bar. 2) Hand-carved bone shield, approximately 1 ½ x 1 ¼-inches, with an engineer castle carved in relief on the verso, captioned "Co. C. 50. N.Y.V." and a list of the regiment's battles etched on the recto: "FRED.BURG / CHANCELORV / DEEP. RUN / STICK IN MUD / GERMANIA FOD / PO RUN". 3) Stamped-brass Engineer castle hat insignia, approximately 1 ¾ x 1-inch, two mounting loops on the reverse. 4) A smaller version of the Engineer castle insignia, German-silver, pinback, 1 x ¾-inches. 5) Two page ALS, 5 ¼ x 8-inches, from Private Remington at "Camp in the Woods near Fredericksburg", February 11, 1863 to his mother. Remington writes of making a Laurel root ring, thanks his mother for the food she sent him and asks his mother to thank the "Ames girls" for the gloves they sent him. 6) CDV of a chapel that the 50th Engineers built near Petersburg, Virginia. The CDV is captioned "Chapel for the camp of the 50th Regt. N.Y.V. Engineers near Petersburg, Va by Company "F" of that Regiment". E.G. Fowx, Photographer, Eng. Brig., City Point, Va. 7) Two color lithography State of New York seals, each measuring approximately 2 ¼-inches in diameter. 8) Reunion ribbon, yellow silk, approximately 1 ¾ x 4 ½-inches.
Wesley D. Remington was 20 years old when he enlisted on August 26, 1861 at Rome, New York as a private. He mustered into C Company of the New York 50th Engineers. The regiment was organized by Colonel C. B. Stuart at Elmira, New York on July 26, 1861 as a regiment of infantry. A few months later the regiment was re-designated the 50th Regiment of Engineers. The regiment participated in many important battles including Seven Days', Malvern Hill, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor and the Appomattox campaign among others. Remington mustered out on June 13, 1865.
