Description

Early All-Brass Eagle-Head Pommel Officers' Sword Made by W. H. Horstmann & Sons.

27 1/4-inch curved blade with wide fullers on each side running to within 7 1/2-inches of the point. The reverse side of the blade is etched with foliate designs and panoplies of arms; the obverse similarly decorated and with the W.H. Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia marking prominently in the design. Cast brass hilt with stylized eagle head pommel. The knucklebow has been modified (or accidentally bent) to a non-standard configuration. The maker's name appears again on the underside of the guard "W.H. Horstmann & Sons / Makers".

Condition: Fair. There is a repair to the blade about 7-inches from the tip. Some scattered nicks in the cutting edge. Knucklebow modified as described. From the Collection of Dr. Phillip R. Rutherford
