Description

French Scythe Polearm.

Approximately 90-inches overall with a 19 1/2-inch double edge spearpoint blade. Steel blade is attached to a 70-inch round wooden shaft secured by two side iron strap bands that originate on the blade [28 1/2-inches in length] with round-head rivets or nails. Note: According to A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor Book by Stone, "In the middle ages the scythe was frequently used as a weapon, the blade being mounted in line with a long, straight shaft.....It was used as an improvised weapon by peasants as late as the end of the 18th century." Similar example; Figure 700 [#2.] pages 545-546.

Condition: Good to very good. Metal with handling age wear, patina and stress cracks. Light to moderate marks; and surface imperfections present. Edges sharpened at some point. Wooden shaft solid, but with holes, scuffs and mars throughout. From the Sylver Schaller Collection.
