Description

17th Century German Swept Hilt Rapier.

Approximately 46 1/2-inches overall with a 38-inch straight blade with partial single fuller marked INV AI on both sides with unidentified marks down the valley of the fuller. Wire-bound style grip [wire missing]. Sword blade 1 1/4-inches at its widest. Wooden grip is 3-inches long, square section with knuckle bow. Iron hilt with straight quillons with branch. Cylindrical pommel with button. Quite impressive sword. Note: According to A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor by George Cameron Stone, pages 524-526], Rapiers are swords especially designed for thrusting and provided with a more or less elaborate guard. The name first appeared in England about 1560, although this type of sword was brought there much earlier by the Spaniards.

Condition: Good to very good with age wear. Showing an overall mottled gray patina on blade and hilt. Fine scratches present to metal. Crude metal and some pitting inside hilt. Wire missing. Tip dull. From the Sylver Schaller Collection.
