German Tilting Gauntlet, Mainfer Style.An exceptional example of a German tilting gauntlet, executed in the Mainfer style, and measuring approximately 16-inches in length with a maximum width of 8 1/2-inches at the flared cuff. This substantial and imposing piece reflects the robust construction and martial elegance associated with specialized tournament armor of the period, particularly in the context of mounted jousting.
The gauntlet is struck with what appears to be an armorer's mark, possibly attributable to the Landshut armory [not confirmed], a renowned center of German armor production during the late Gothic and early Renaissance periods. The outer edge is finely finished with a robust rope-patterned border, a stylistic element consistent with German Gothic armor, providing both decorative appeal and reinforcement. The knuckle plate is fitted with four domed rivets, indicative of classic tilting design, likely intended to absorb and deflect lance impact in tournament settings. Appears to be late 15th to early 16th Century. Weighs 3.5 lbs.
Condition: Fine condition as reconditioned. The surface has been professionally conserved, now displaying a near-mint presentation while retaining all original structural elements, including the clearly defined armorer's mark. The interior reveals a rich, aged patina with minor surface pitting.
