Description

An Excavated and Well-Preserved Oakeshott Type XII Medieval Sword.

A fine example of a Type XII sword, as described by R. Ewart Oakeshott in The Sword in the Age of Chivalry [see p. 37 for typological reference]. The sword measures approximately 41-inches in overall length, with a 33 3/4-inch flat blade that tapers evenly to a somewhat defined point, characteristic of this type's design balance between cutting efficiency and thrusting capability. The blade measures 1 3/4-inches in width at its broadest point, just above the hilt.

The grip is slightly longer than is typical for earlier iterations of this type, measuring approximately 4 3/4-inches, likely intended to offer greater leverage and control. The tang is flat, with a subtle swelling starting at the center, suggesting it may have originally been secured with a two-piece grip. The cross-guard spans roughly 7-inches, straight and of rectangular section, with broadened terminals.
The pommel is of flattened, round form, best described as "wafer-shaped" or a flattened disc, consistent with Oakeshott's classification of the Type I pommel variant frequently paired with Type XII blades. Sword comes with internet research directly from consignor, showing similar examples offered at auctions and photocopy of the page 37 of Oakeshott's book.

Condition: Presented in good excavated condition. The surface retains a deep, stable patina, with pitting throughout, as expected for a sword of this antiquity. The blade remains structurally sound, with no movement in the guard or quillons, and the overall form is well-preserved, offering strong typological integrity.
