Description

An Exceedingly Rare and Seldom seen Lower Breast and Abdominal Reinforce for the Rennen.

A masterfully crafted piece of steel armor dating to the 15th century, featuring an early form of fluting, decorative and structural technique that would become a hallmark of late Gothic and early Renaissance armor styles, particularly in German craftsmanship. The fluting not only enhances the visual appeal but also adds strength to the metal surface without additional weight.

This piece is integrated with a fluted skirt composed of four lames [overlapping horizontal plates], designed to offer both flexibility and protection to the upper legs and hips during combat or ceremonial use. Fitted with its matching pair of tilting tassets, also fluted en suite, which provided further protection to the upper thighs, particularly during mounted tournaments such as the Rennen or Stechen.
The armor's styling and construction suggest it may have been intended for tournament use, reflecting the transitional aesthetics and functional innovations of late 15th-century European armory. 22-inches [height] and approximately 18-inches [width]. A folder of internet research is included in the sale; showing similar examples and prices realized from other sales.

Condition: Good for its age and configuration. Mottled patina with dents and bruising, as expected. Scuffs to edges. Leather replacements, held together with wire. Interior with a pronounced patina indicative of extended age and exposure. Weighing approximately 14 lbs.
