Description

Temperance Movement: Allegorical Chromolithograph. The Temperance or Cold Water Army movement in America started in the 1840s and gradually built up steam, culminating in the passage of the 18th Amendment establishing prohibition nationwide. This 23" x 17" chromolithograph is titled "Black Valley Railroad." It depicts a drunkard's progress along a railway line, a very well realized, macabre image with skeletal figures punctuating the progress of the scene. Copyrighted by S. W. Hanks in 1863, it was drawn by lithographer Emil Ackerman of Boston and printed by Charles H. Crosby. It is considered the best of the temperance prints and superior to the Bufford version. It has full margins, marred four inches away from the image by removal of glue by professional paper restorers. It will mat and display very nicely.
