Description

Seth Bullock: Mining Company Stock Certificate Signed by the Legendary Western Lawman. Bullock was the first sheriff of the notorious Gold Rush town of Deadwood, South Dakota, whose first task was to arrest Jack McCall, killer of Wild Bill Hickok. Interestingly, Bullock won out for the job over Wyatt Earp, who had traveled to Deadwood to seek the position. In the 1880s, he became active in several mining ventures in the area, including this company, whose stock certificate he signed in 1888.

Also included is an 1884 check made out to and endorsed on the verso by Star & Bullock. Sol Star & Seth Bullock had a hardware business in Helena, Montana. When gold was discovered in 1876 at Deadwood, they packed up and moved, quickly opening a store and warehouse on Main Street. When the store was destroyed by the 1894 fire, they built the Bullock Hotel over the site; it is still open today.
