Description

George Washington: His Death Reported on Both Sides of the Atlantic. Washington's death was reported in both newspapers and magazines. Page 84 of the "Gentleman's Magazine" for January 1800, published by Sylvanus Urban of London, notes the passing of the "illustrious George Washington" of an "inflammatory sore throat". In its American counterpart, "The Monthly Magazine and American Review" (installments for September, October, November and December 1799 bound together), we can what may well be the first magazine notice of his death on page 475. The American report occupies five columns, accompanied by an illustration, in contrast to the half-column in the English publication.
