Description

Abraham Lincoln Assassination: Pass to the Surratt Trial. John Surratt was one of the Lincoln assassination conspirators who managed to escape the clutches of the authorities in the confusion following the events of April 14th. He was eventually apprehended, employed as a Papal Guard at the time, extradited to the United States and put on trial in August 1867. His involvement, if any, was likely limited to the initial plot to kidnap the President. By the time the plans were changed to assassination, he had left Washington, D.C. and was no longer involved. The trial resulted in a hung jury and Surratt was set free and embarked on the lecture circuit. His mother's involvement was a different matter and, in 1865, she was tried with the other conspirators, convicted and executed. Passes to the Surratt Trial of 1867 are quite rare. This example measures 3" x 1.75", has a vertical crease and is inscribed in pencil on the verso: "From E. M. Stanton through Genl. J. A. Ekin Aug. 1867". It is hard to imagine a finer provenance.
