Description

1840 "Democracy!" Broadside. 11.75" x 14.5", [South Berwick [Maine], August 29, 1840, calling the citizens of South Berwick to re-elect Town Representative John Fairfield. In full:

"The undersigned Democratic Citizens of South Berwick, and numbering more than 200 Legal Voters, respectfully invite all our fellow-townsmen, who are in favor of the re-election of JOHN FAIRFIELD, to assemble at the Meeting House near Emery's Bridge in South Berwick, on SATURDAY the 5th day of September next, at 2 o'clock P.M. for the purpose of agreeing on a Candidate for Town Representative. The Federalists, as usual, have already sounded the not of Victory, but the Ballot Box speaks truth. August 29, 1840."

Printed below the text are the 200 names of the "Democratic Citizens." The ink from a name written on the verso has bled through.
