Description

George Washington: Impressive Liverpool Punch Bowl. There are two George Washington transfers on this superlative 11" punch bowl. They both appear on the curved sides of the bowl. One shows Washington, Franklin an angel and three Goddesses examining a map of the Eastern seaboard of America, the newly-liberated colonies. The other shows Washington on horseback in a landscape, inscribed: "His Excellency General George Washington, Marshal of France and Commander in chief of all the North American Continental Forces." Two nautical transfers complete the side decorations. The interior of the bowl depicts a hand-colored view of a ship flying the American flag, inscribed: "Success to Capt. Archibald Taylor Wherever He Goes." By its very nature, this is a unique presentation piece and was likely custom ordered for Captain Taylor's retirement. The condition is outstanding. It likely dates from 1790-1795.
