First Edition of a Key Work in the Run-Up to the American Revolution
Josiah Quincy, Jun'r. Observations on the Act of Parliament Commonly Called the Boston Port-Bill; with Thoughts on Civil Society and Standing Armies. Boston: Printed for and Sold by Edes and Gill, in Queen Street, 1774. First edition. Quarto (8.125 x 4.94 inches, 20.7 x 12.5 cm). [ii], [1]-82 pages. In an unsophisticated contemporary binding with old leather backstrip and corners over paper-covered boards. Leather heavily worn and flaking; three leather corners missing. Boards substantially rubbed, with some peeling and paper loss; one corner worn away. Front hinge cracked. Foxing and toning to pages throughout. Title page has had the top .875 inches cut away. In better than good condition. [Bound with:] Excerpts from approximately a dozen publications spanning 1774 to 1788, including pages from Royal American Magazine (1774) and Columbian Magazine (1788); the rest is comprised of excerpts from The History of the Proceedings and Debates of the House of Commons and the House of Lords from 1777 and 1778. Pages throughout toned and foxed, with a couple of instances of minor dampstaining. Sammelband of Revolutionary War-era writings in overall good or better condition in a worn period binding.Not only was Josiah Quincy a Harvard-educated lawyer (he acted as John Adams' co-counsel in defending the soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre), he was also a patriot and a powerful orator and essayist who spoke out forcefully against British oppression in the American colonies. In this important work that helped spark the American Revolution, Quincy effectively protested the Intolerable Acts, and he urgently--and soaringly--exhorted his fellow Americans to rebel against the British and to fight for independence.
