Description
A Friendly Dickens ALS, Written During the Publication of Nicholas Nickleby
Charles Dickens. Autograph Letter Signed, "Charles Dickens", one page, 4.375" x 7.1875", 48 Doughty Street, London, May 8, 1838. To John Hughes, editor of The Boscobel Tracts and father of Thomas Hughes, author of Tom Brown's School Days.Written from Dickens's Doughty Street address, where he lived between March 1837 and December 1839 (and the current home of the Charles Dickens Museum), this letter is an early example of Dickens correspondence. It is matted with an engraving of the young Dickens which was used as the frontispiece to Nicholas Nickleby, published while Dickens lived at 48 Doughty Street. Overall size: approximately 12" x 10".
In this presumably unpublished correspondence, Dickens writes to Hughes, in full: "48 Doughty Street / Tuesday May 8th, 1838 / Sir, / I very much regret that / the number of similar en- / gagements I have already / formed will prevent my / acting as a Vice President / at your next anniversary dinner, / but I hope to be more fortunate / on another occasion. / I am Sir, / Very Truly Yours / Charles Dickens [flourish] / John Hughes Esquire."
A cordial message from a youthful Dickens to the more senior Hughes, boldly signed with Dickens' typical flourish. One vertical and two horizontal mailing folds. Light age-spotting, else fine. From the Victor Gulotta Collection.
