A Rare Piece of Steinbeckiana - The Original Salesman's Dummy for The Grapes of Wrath
[John Steinbeck, association]. The Grapes of Wrath. New York: The Viking Press, 1939.Salesman's dummy or mock-up. Octavo. [vi], [622] pages. Only pages [i] -[vi] and [1] - 10 have text on them; the remaining text is blank.
Publisher's full light brown cloth, front cover double-ruled and lettered in blue, spine lettered in blue. Plain endpapers. Spine a bit browned, some rubbing to edges, some browning, foxing and offset to endpapers, some foxing to edges of text block. Rear hinge cracked. Still, a very good copy of this very unusual item. The cover and endpaper design for the published book are radically different from what appears on the dummy copy, which makes the dummy even more desirable.
Salesman's dummies are unfinished examples of a given book used by salesmen working for the publisher to encourage booksellers to order the book. It was a common practice in the nineteenth century, used much less so since then.
