Publisher's dark green cloth with gilt title to front board, and gilt- and red-stamped spine. In the publisher's cardboard slipcase and the original acetate jacket. Publisher's red stain to edges. Minor wear to extremities. Some chipping to acetate. Light wear and uneven fading to slipcase. A near fine copy with the rare original slipcase.

Steinbeck wrote about this book, his personal favorite: "It has everything in it I have been able to learn about my craft or profession in all these years. [...] I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this."
