An Association Copy from Irving to Philip Henry Stanhope, Uncut, in the Original Boards
Washington Irving. The Alhambra: a Series of Tales and Sketches of the Moors and Spaniards. By the Author of the Sketch Book. Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1832.First American edition, with the imprint of Volume II reading "Philadelphla" for "Philadelphia," and very likely an advance copy given to Philip Henry Stanhope, Viscount Mahon by the author. Two octavo volumes. [2, blank], iv, [13]-234, [2, Contents leaf], [2, blank] pages; [2, blank], [1, title page]-236 pages (binding variant A, per BAL).
Publisher's original brown cloth spine over paper boards with printed paper title labels on the spines. All edges uncut. Moderate shelf wear and staining to boards. Minor chipping at the spine ends and paper labels (also rubbed, and with the label to Volume I partially perished). Corners exposed. Front endpaper in Volume I tender. Hinges just starting on both volumes, with uneven foxing throughout and a small dampstain running along the top margins, not affecting any text in either volume. Small stain to bottom corner of a few text leaves in Volume II. Ownership signature to top of both title pages. Philip Earl Stanhope's bookplate to front pastedown of Volume I. A wonderful, tall, unsophisticated copy in very good condition.
Mounted onto the front endpapers of Volume II is a letter written from London by Stanhope, Viscount Mahon, inviting Washington Irving to dinner "at half past six very precisely."
Viscount Mahon, later fourth Earl of Stanhope wrote several historical works on Spain, including The History of the War of the Succession in Spain, 1702-1714, largely based on the papers of the first earl of Stanhope. This work was published in London in 1832, at which place and time Irving was Secretary to the U.S. Legation. It is likely that Irving and Stanhope discussed Spanish history when they dined together, as Irving was one of the foremost scholars on Spain, evidence by the present work. A wonderful association copy between two writers of Spanish history.
