Description

First Edition Signed by F. Scott Fitzgerald and in the Original Dust Jacket

F. Scott Fitzgerald. Tender is the Night. A Romance. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934.

First edition, first printing. Signed by Fitzgerald on the front free endpaper. Octavo. [x], 408 pages. With in-text decorations by Edward Shenton.

Original dark green cloth, blind single-rule border on front cover, gilt-lettered spine. Original pictorial dust jacket. Jacket somewhat browned, spine headcap and corners somewhat chipped, some rubbing and light wear to jacket edges and joints, three small tape repairs to jacket verso, gilt on cloth spine slightly dull, some rubbing to cloth edges, one small indentation on front cover, front hinge starting (about half of an inch) at the top, some intermittent foxing in text. Overall, a very good copy. Housed in a three-quarter morocco clamshell case. Exceedingly rare with signature and dust jacket.

In this novel, the protagonist, psychiatrist Dick Diver, falls in love and marries one of his patients, the beautiful, yet disturbed, Nicole. Dick's travails with her (he nurses her to health, but she leaves him for another man and he deteriorates) echo Fitzgerald's own increasingly sad and desperate life with his mentally ill wife, Zelda. This is perhaps Fitzgerald's most powerful and tragic work.

Bruccoli, Fitzgerald, A 14.1.a.
