The Lingos were family friends of the Trumans. Benjamin Harrison Lingo was a commander in the U.S. Navy, his wife Marie was the director of the Washington, DC U.S.O., and their daughter Jane was a childhood friend of Truman's daughter Margaret. Jane, who later became the first woman admitted into the National Press Club, is mentioned in the book in one of Truman's diary entries in which he mentions one of her sleepovers with Margaret in which the girls stayed in the Lincoln Bedroom.
