Limited to Only Six Copies, Commissioned by Financier J. P. Morgan

[J. P. Morgan]. The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church.... London: Printed for J. P. Morgan by Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1910.

Two thick quarto volumes. 356, 357-587 pages. Second issue as determined by the date of the warrant on page 572. This is number 6 of only 6 copies which J. P. Morgan commissioned to be printed on vellum by the King's printers, and to be bound by his specifications.

Bound in leather-backed thick oak boards. The front pastedowns of both volumes are stamped: "Bound by J. Desmonts. J. Mac Donald Co., Norwalk, Conn." This is most likely the bindery which provided the excellent re-backing repair to this set. This set, in Volume I, has a manuscript purchase note in black ink: "Ronald Thomas, Natus December 17. 1874 / 50 doll." Thomas' bookplate is also on the front pastedown of Volume I. Tipped to the rear pastedown of Volume I is an early vellum Latin manuscript leaf (115 x 158 mm). The former owner has identified this leaf with an ink description underneath as: "a page of religious text on uterine vellum (sheep) written in 1440." A beautiful set in near fine condition.
