Stephen A. Douglas: Rare and Important Portrait Flag.Political flags, especially with portraits, are definitely the aristocrats of the campaign memorabilia world, with examples selling well into six figures. Douglas is among the most desirable candidates, and especially so since virtually all his campaign items except for a handful of widely distributed ferrotypes and medalets are rare. This is a gorgeous example, crisp and near mint, with strong, vibrant colors and only the slightest hint of aging. A true prize of the Frent Collection. 12.5" x 8".
The flag offered here is one of a small group which came to light in the 1980s. The Frents got early news of the "find," and rushed over to Pennsylvania to secure first pick. They purchased two examples, one for themselves and one for their friend the legendary flag collector Fred Israel. Of course they kept the "pick of the litter," and it is safe to say that this is one of the finest examples known.
