Description
The Handsome Facsimile Edition of Ptolemy's Cosmography
Claudius Ptolemy. Cosmografia. Atlas de Claudio Ptolemy. Latin Codex. Introduction by Victor Navarro Brotons. Valencia, Spain: University of Valencia, [1983].Facsimile edition based on the original atlas housed in the University of Valencia. One of only 3,000 copies printed (only 1,000 copies were printed for the English issue). Two folio volumes. One volume is the English language issue of the commentary by Professors Victor Brotons, Angel Alvarez, and Enrique Galdeano (203 pages, approximately 16 x 11.25 inches, printed and paginated on rectos only). The second volume is the full-color facsimile of Cosmografia (216 pages, approximately 17.25 x 11.75 inches). This exceptional facsimile perfectly captures the original fifteenth-century calligraphy, and is finely decorated by gold-embossed capitals. Titles are in red with subtitles every ten pages. It is printed on parchment and has twenty-seven full-color maps, of which twenty-six are double-page.
Commentary volume is bound in publisher's brown calf over cloth, front cover stamped in black; the facsimile volume is handsomely bound to style in modern full black morocco, covers elaborately stamped in blind, metal cornerpieces. Some rubbing to bindings, one gutter in Commentary volume cracked (yet still solid). Overall fine. House in original cloth slipcase.
The codex which is reproduced originally belonged to the library of Alfonse V, in Naples and dates before 1458, the year in which Alfonse died. Afterwards, it became the property of Fernando of Aragon, the Duke of Calabria, who sent it to the cloister of San Miguel de los Reyes in Valencia, where it eventually found its way into the University of Valencia, where it now resides.
