Description

Hand-Colored Aquatints

J. J. von Gerning. A Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine, from Metz to Cologne: with Illustrations of the Scenes of Remarkable Events, and of Popular Traditions. London: R. Ackermann, 1820.

First edition. Folio. xiv, 178 pages. List of subscribers. Colored frontispiece, with twenty-five additional hand-colored engraved plates, including a folding map (all called for). However, this copy has a duplicate plate for Coblentz, but lacks the Cologne plate; most likely a publisher's error.

Red cloth over boards. Blind-stamped designs to boards. Paper title label to spine, inked by hand. Binding slightly cocked. Corners bumped. Some minor soiling to boards. Moderate foxing. Plates fresh and clean. Very good.

Beautiful colored aquatints from the drawings of M. Schuetz, engraved by Havell and Sutherland. The folding map at the rear was published in March of 1820 at R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, engraved by Bartlett.

Abbey, Travel 217.
