A Voyage Round the World...by B. Funnel...IV. Capt. Cowley's Voyage Round the Globe. V. Capt. Sharp's Journey...VI. Capt. Wood's Voyage...VII. Capt. Wood's Voyage... London: James and John Knapton, 1729.The first collected edition, usually considered the best. The additional title-page in Volume I states "7th edition, corrected." Hill states that the narratives of the second volume are the fourth edition, the third volume are the third edition, and the fourth volume are not designated. Together, these volumes make up the most complete and textually desirable version of these important voyages. Four octavo volumes. With numerous folding maps and plates inserted throughout.
Uniformly bound in contemporary half calf, with modern marbled paper boards and calf spines, spines with green gilt morocco lettering labels. Some toning to text, some soiling to text, minor wear to folding plates, hinges with paper reinforcement. Still, very good.
William Dampier, celebrated navigator, and sometime buccaneer, made his first voyage to the Pacific in 1680, where he raided the Spanish settlements along the coast of South America. Then he crossed the Pacific to the East Indies. He spent the next twenty years traveling in the Pacific, visiting Tierra del Fuego, South and Central America, Guam, the Philippines, China, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. He circumnavigated the globe in 1701.
