Description

Early English Text on Witchcraft

Joseph Glanvil. Saducismus Triumphatus: or Full and Plain Evidence Concerning Witches and Apparitions. In Two Parts. The First Treating of Their Possibility, The Second of Their Real Existence. London: J. Collins and S. Lownds, 1681.

Presumed first edition. Octavo. [iv], 1-58,[xiv], 1-180, [xiv], 1-328, [i] pages. Initial engraved frontispiece and engraved title denoting Part the Second.

Leather over boards with gilt spine titles and decoration. Five raised bands. All edges red. Both boards detached, with amateur transparent tape repair. Covers and spine well rubbed, with bumped corners and loss at spine ends. Some toning to edges with very minor worming to first sixty pages. Owner's name in pen on front free endpaper. Fore-edge slightly rubbed. Otherwise a very good copy of an extremely scarce book.

Glanvil was raised in a strict Puritan household, educated at Oxford, and later served at various theological posts including rector of the Abbey Church from 1666 to 1680. This particular book strongly influenced Cotton Mather's Discourse on Witchcraft and his role in the Salem Witch Trials.
