Thomas Hardy. Wessex Tales. Strange, Lively, and Commonplace. London: Macmillan and Co., 1888. First edition, one of 634 copies bound by the publisher. Two octavo volumes. [viii], 247; [viii], 212, [4, publisher's advertisements] pages. Illustrated frontispiece in volume one. Publisher's green cloth with gilt spine titles; blocked in pale green on front and spine with bands at top and bottom, and publisher's monogram device on rear covers. Edges uncut. Housed together in a green half-leather slipcase and chemise. Moderate edge wear to the cloth, with some abrading along the joints. Light rubbing and minimal soiling to the boards. Bumped corners and bottom edges. Spines a bit cocked. Bookplate of collector, Arthur M. Brown affixed to each front pastedown, which has offset to the front free endpapers. A clean text. Very good condition. Purdy, pp. 58-60.
