A Fantastic Association Copy with an Original Drawing by Maurice Leloir

[Maurice Leloir, illustrator]. Alexandre Dumas. The Three Musketeers. Translated by William Robson with a Letter from Alexandre Dumas Fils. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1928. First edition with 250 illustrations by Maurice Leloir. With an original pencil sketch of one of the musketeers, presumably d'Artagnan, by Leloir, with warm presentation inscription in ink by Leloir to screenwriter Lotta Woods (who had brought Leloir to Hollywood, and worked with him on The Iron Mask, where he was the costume and production designer). Octavo. xxiv, [358] pages. With 250 intertextual illustrations. Contemporary half blue morocco over blue cloth boards, spine tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endleaves. Some wear to binding, front hinge repaired. A very good copy. Douglas Fairbanks Jr.'s copy with his bookplate.

Laid in is a very warm and personal letter to Mrs. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. from screenwriter and family friend Lotta Woods (1869-1967) who had written several of Douglas Fairbanks Sr.'s films, including The Three Musketeers, Son of Zorro, and Thief of Baghdad. The letter states that this book is to be held for Fairbanks Jr. as her legacy to him after she dies. She quotes Ed Sullivan in saying "Up in heaven Doug Sr. is proudly telling the other angels 'That's my boy!'" (in reference to Doug Jr.'s valiant service to the United States and Britain in World War II). Overall, a charming and wonderful collection with a fantastic association.
